Julia Shirley, Practicum Student

Background and Experience

Julia has a passion for helping others, which has led her to pursue a career in social work.  Julia gained experience at the Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County working with families who were affected by abuse and neglect.  During her time at the Advocacy Center, Julia connected families with resources and provided assistance to those in need.   Julia’s education has allowed her to acquire the skills needed to work with individuals, families, and communities dealing with a variety of different issues and concerns and she is committed to learning even more through her studies and her experiences.


Personal Statement

Through my social work education at the University of North Texas, I learned to appreciate the field of social work and the professionals within the field.  My experience has led me to a desire to help others through counseling.  I believe that everyone’s issues are important regardless of how big or small.  My goal is to focus on the unique needs of my clients to help them process their feelings and reach their goals. I have always had a passion for helping people.  


Education and Training

Julia earned her Bachelor of Social Work degree from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas.  She is currently pursuing her Masters in Social Work at Texas A&M University – Commerce in Commerce, Texas.  After graduation, Julia’s goal is to become a Licensed Master Social Worker.  She hopes to then gain her clinical hours to eventually become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.  Julia is a practicum student and is under the supervision of Amanda Cortez, LCSW..
