Background and Experience
Sheila’s experiences include 20+ years of helping others in their difficult times. She is happy to work with adolescents, adults, and divorce/blended families to navigate through their struggles. Sheila has extensive skills in addiction recovery with both clients as well as their family members. She also works with families in conflict due to divorce/blended family dynamics, codependency, boundary setting, reducing stress/anxiety symptoms, rebuilding self esteem, and finding mutual compromise in relationships, especially those who are in divorce and blended families. Sheila’s style of therapy involves helping clients find the origin of how their beliefs were developed and helps individuals who desire to reprocess their journey while focusing on empowerment and creating change with a personalized treatment plan.
Personal Statement
Sheila is of the belief that it takes a great deal of courage to reach out to others for assistance. Growing up in a family of helping others, Sheila started her career assisting adolescents in foster care and later served in the juvenile justice system. She soon discovered how an individual’s traumatic experiences impact belief patterns as their environments were the foundation. Sheila gained an interest in how children's lives were impacted by parents' substance abuse and took an interest in working with those impacted with addictions as well as learning how divorce impacts children when parents are not cooperative in the child’s best interest or when children are alienated from their bonded parent.
Sheila offers a safe environment where struggles can be shared, challenges overcome, and courage can be rebuilt with support of empowerment and accountability. Sheila utilizes a person-centered treatment approach and is skilled in Cognitive Behavior Therapy which helps individuals change their own thinking and manage their challenging emotions. Sheila also incorporates Solution-Focused Therapy, as well as EMDR to facilitate clients to reprocess the trauma to overcome their personal traumatic events.
A native of rural Kansas, Sheila is a firm believer in nature as a healing element and she loves any type of outside adventure including hiking, traveling, kayaking, motorcycling, riding the trails in the mountains, sporting events with her KC Chiefs/Royals teams, but her favorite and most treasured times are spent with her grandchildren.
