Background and Experience
Since childhood, Mikayla has had a deep interest in the minds of people around her. She worked from a young age with developmentally disabled kids and kids who were neurodivergent. Her interests evolved to include neurological disorders like Alzheimer's and other dementia types due to personal loss. Because of this, she worked as an MHT in a local mental health hospital, where her experiences lead her to develop a passion for helping LGBTQIA+ teens. She then worked as a Therapeutic Activities Director in a memory care facility. It was there that her interest turned to caretakers and grief and loss therapy. Mikayla recognized that the pain of loss and the difficulties surrounding change (positive and negative) are not ones that should be traversed alone.
Mikayla is an LGBTQIA+ and a neurodivergent allied therapist. She applies a person-centered approach, and uses a variety of skills and strategies to help clients heal the past and prepare for the future. She offers faith-based therapy upon request.
Personal Statement
Every memory and story of my childhood involves learning. I have always been passionate about gathering information and deepening understanding. When that interest evolved from books to people, I quickly decided that becoming a therapist was my calling. I was raised in an evangelical Christian home and church. Both that upbringing and my own deconstruction pathway have influenced who I am as a person and as a therapist. I do not specialize in Christian counseling, though I do believe that faith, whether in self or in a higher power, is important to personal development. I am more than willing to incorporate whatever faith, spiritual practices, and beliefs are integral to your individual journey into your therapeutic experience if you wish to share them with me. I feel that my open mindedness, my genuine interest in you as a client and as a person, and my personal experience with mental health struggles make me a great match for you. I believe in creating an environment of mutual trust where honesty defeats shame and the truth only leads us forward. Growth is not easy, but it is achievable.
Education and Training
Mikayla received a bachelor's degree in Human Services and Psychology and is currently in the final stages of earning a graduate degree in Clinical Mental Health. Her clinical experience comes from working closely with neurodivergent children, adults and children with developmental disabilities, LGBTQIA+ youth, elderly dementia patients, and adults with addiction in medical clinical settings and in recreational environments. Currently, she works as a Data Management Specialist for an international rail company's Texas headquarters. In her free time (which, let's be honest, there isn't much of at the moment), she loves to draw, write, lift weights, read, and cook. She loves to try new things, travel, and create at any opportunity.
